This thesis is about machines which make rhythms. I explored them in three different ways:
- Researching how the physical structure of musical instruments shapes the kinds of rhythms that it can produce. This requires include a sensitivity toward the listening experience, as well as an understanding of the instrument's mechanics, and its rhythmic expressed as mathematical patterns.
- Looking into the creative working methods associated with building instruments, both from my personal experience and from other practitioners. This always deals with the notion of rediscovery, since most mechanical musical instruments have already been discovered, thousands of years ago.
- Compiling a brief history of mechanical musical instruments
